    1. Measure and cut wood (figure A). You need two pieces that are 1/2" by 6" by 16", two pieces 1/2" by 6" by 5-1/2", and one piece that is 1/2" by 6" by 15".

    2. Next, measure and cut the wood cleats. You will need 10 pieces that are 1/2" by 2" by 1".

    3. Place a dab of wood glue on the 1" cleat pieces. Starting an inch from the side edge, glue them to the bottom edge of four of the boards -- the two 16" lengths and two 5-1/2" lengths. Tack down with a small nail for extra strength. You should end up with four, evenly spaced, on each of the longer boards (figure B) and one, centered, on the shorter board.

    4. Now, make a box with these four boards. The shorter end pieces should be placed inside the two longer pieces (figure C).

    5. Put wood glue on the short end pieces and tape the corners together.

    6. Place a piece of masking tape on the drill bit, leaving 3/4-inch exposed (figure D). Predrill the nail holes up to the tape line on all four corners.

    7. Hammer the nails in.

    8. Drill 10 big holes in the remaining 15" board (figure E). These are drainage holes and should be evenly spaced out.

    9. Paint with primer, color top coat and shellac, letting each coat dry as you go. Decorate your box any way you choose.

    10. Insert board with holes into the box so that it rests on the cleats. Plant flowers (figure F).

    Tips:

    • Always have an adult supervise when using tools.

    • Cut wood outside and remember to clean up your mess.

    • Always use safety glasses when sawing or drilling.

    • You may need a friend to hold the boards while you cut them to length, or you can clamp it to a table.
