Host Susan Khalje's guest, fiber artist Diane Ricks, introduces her technique for creating feathery panels of silk fabric, which are then added to the front of a jacket to form lovely textured panels (figure A). Materials: Any collarless jacket pattern Pattern paper Hip curve ruler Silk dupioni, amount according to pattern requirements plus 1 yard 1 yard dark coordinating dupioni color 1 yard silk organza 1/3 yard accent color dupioni # 1 1/3 yard accent color dupioni # 2 1/3 yard accent color dupioni # 3 Interfacing for jacket pieces Thread to match jacket color Small sharp scissors Small stiff scrubbing brush (nail brush) Rattail or other cording to create piping Sewing machine with a quilting bar Chalk marker Basic sewing supplies To adjust pattern: - To create the front panels, measure 3" to 3-1/2" in from the neckline along the shoulder and mark point A.
- Measure 2" in from the front edge at the hem, and mark point B.
- Using a hip curve ruler, connect the two marks with a slightly curved line.
- Measure up from the hem 4" on the new line, and mark point C.
- Place additional pattern paper under the pattern to trace onto, extending out from the jacket center front (figure B).
- Measure out 5" to 5-1/2" from point C and up 1", and mark as point D. Connect points C and D.
- Measure 5/8" in from the top center neck edge and mark as point E. Connect points D and E. This will create a narrow, angled triangular shape for the front panel.
- Cut along the first line (A to B) to separate the triangle from the jacket front. Don't forget to add 5/8 " seam allowance on both sides of this cut.
- Trim at line C to D, and discard this small pattern piece at the bottom of the jacket front. This is your new pattern piece for the angled front panel. You can flip it for left and right sides. It's a good idea to mark your angled stitching lines on this, so that you can match them to the completed slashed panels, creating a "V" effect with the stitching lines of the two sides.
