    Joker Card

    Materials:

    Foam core (32" x 40")
    Black marker
    Craft paints and brushes
    1/2 yard red checked fabric
    1/2 yard red fabric
    White lace or eyelet
    Strong spray adhesive
1 yd., 2" white grosgrain ribbon
    4 pieces of colored felt 12" x 18"
    Four 3/4" gold jingle bells
    Sewing machine
    Scissors
    12" of 3/4" elastic
    4" narrow ribbon

    1. Use the joker card from a deck of cards for design inspiration.

    2. Cut the foam core in half horizontally to get 2 pieces 20" wide by 32" high. Round the corners.

    3. For the back of the card, cut a piece of red checked fabric on the bias so that you have a piece 16" x 28." Using spray adhesive, spray one side and adhere it to the center of one piece of foam core.

    4. Cut 2" strips of red fabric and adhere them to overlap the edges of the checked fabric, 1" from the edge of the foam core.

    5. Cut the lace or eyelet and adhere it over the red and checked fabric. This creates the kind of pattern you find on the back of a deck of cards.

Note: You can also use paint, or cut out paper to get the same effect.

    6. For the front of the card, on the second piece of foam core, use a black marker to draw a line all around the edges 3" in from the outside edge.

    7. Sketch the design for the joker in the center, and mark the letters of "JOKER" on the card.

    8. Using the paints, paint in the picture and the words.

Note: Remember that cards are usually split in the middle so the design is the same in either direction.

    9. Cut the white ribbon in half and attach the ends of each half to the back of the Joker placard. Fit it over the shoulders on the subject and attach to the back of the other placard. Be sure the head will fit through the straps.

    10. For the joker's hat, measure the model's head size and divide by 4. Enlarge the pattern so the straight bottom line is equal to that number at about 5-1/2 to 6."

    11. Using the enlarged pattern, cut out four sides to the Joker's hat. You can use 4 different colors of felt, or alternate red and black felt, or use a heavy patterned fabric.

    12. Sew the pieces right sides together using thread that matches one of the fabric colors. Sew from the outer corner of each piece and work toward the tops (peaks). The top piece of each section should come together exactly to form the top of the hat.

    13. When you sew the corners at the ends, insert a 2" piece of ribbon threaded with a jingle bell. The bell will be between the pieces of the felt and the ends of the ribbon will come out the corner.

    14. Fit the hat on the person who will wear it to see if it too large, etc.

    15. Turn up the bottom edge 1" to the inside and add as much elastic as necessary to make it fit. You may need elastic in only one section. Sew the elastic to the seams, and stitch the bottom seam.

    16. Turn the hat right side out, with jingle bells dangling.
