"Masking" is a common technique used in airbrushing. In this case, a square mask is used to shield the rest of the canvas.

After airbrushing a background color, place different objects such as a piece of lace or screen, a comb or a feather over the surface and airbrush another color onto the canvas.

A stencil was used as a pattern for airbrushing this jungle cat onto a tote bag.

Airbrush artist Bettie Johnson, a contributing editor to Airbrush Action Magazine , presents some of the terrific effects that can be achieved with an airbrush.

Airbrushing is especially useful for gradually changing from one color to another to create a subtle, faded look.

Be sure to clean the airbrush when changing colors.

A tank of air under pressure propels the paint. A regulator governs air flow from the tank. Controls on the airbrush determine how much paint is disbursed.

A common technique in airbrushing is "masking," in which the artist shields certain areas from paint. Foto/Frisket is a transparent, self-sticking masking and stenciling material that's specially formulated for easy lift-off. It is reusable and extremely easy to cut. This helps prevent the artist from cutting through the film and into the working surface. The material will not buckle when paints are sprayed on it, thus preventing underspray.

If you don't want to invest a great deal of money in an airbrush, less expensive kits -- ranging from $35 to $80 -- are available at craft and art-supply stores.

Some art stores offer classes in airbrushing techniques used on T-shirts, fingernails and other surfaces.
