    Figure B

    Materials:

    Cotton T-shirt
    Dye in various colors
    Rubber gloves
    Rubber bands
    Salt
Container for mixing dye and dipping shirts
    Water

    1. Begin by gathering sections of the front and back of the shirt, wrapping them tightly with rubber bands ( figure A ). The rubber bands will create a border for the colors -- place them either in a pattern or randomly ... it's up to you!

    2. Following the manufacturer's instructions on the package, carefully mix each color of dye in a separate container.

    3. Next, add a few teaspoons of salt to the dye mixture. The salt will help set the pigment in the dye.

    4. Protect your hands with rubber gloves, then carefully swirl the shirt through the dye( figure B ), immersing different areas in each color. Allow the immersed portion(s) of fabric to soak for about an hour in the desired shade. Remember, you're the artist -- so use as many or as few colors as you like!

    5. When you've added all the colors, let the shirt sit and dry for about 3-4 hours. Once the shirt has dried, rinse thoroughly with water and remove the rubber bands.

    Tips for Tie Dyeing:

    • Always wear old clothes and rubber gloves.

    • Protect working area with newspapers or another type of protective material.

    • Do not allow young children to mix or handle dye without adult supervision.
