Contrasting bias piping gives definition and elegance to a garment. Here are some tips for adding piping to the satin-and-terrycloth robe.

    1. Begin with front and back left sections of terry robe. Stitch front and back of terry together using stay tape.

    2. Begin with satin, cording, complete satin robe and complete terry robe with belt loops. Cut satin on bias (figure A).

Expert tip: Here's an easy technique for finding the bias of fabric: First pull a thread to find the horizontal grain. Place a pin at 10" along the horizontal. Then from the pulled thread measure 10" up the selvage; mark with a pin. Place a ruler on the diagonal, connecting the two pins, to find the bias.

    3. Connect strips using straight stitch.

    4. Encase cording using zipper foot with even seams (figure B).

Expert tip: Place the fabric around the cording very carefully, making sure to avoid getting any stretch in the fabric. This will help you avoid ripples in your piping.

    5. Beginning with long piping strip, pin piping to satin robe (entire perimeter of robe, from bottom front, over collar, down left front and along hem). Be sure to clip the piping seam allowance carefully at any angles or curves (figure C).

    6. Stitch piping onto robe.

Expert tip: To create a neat connection of two ends of the piping, trim away the cording approximately 1" on either end (figure D). Then carefully overlap the two ends of the fabric and stitch (figure E).
