Pin tearaway to dress hem, placing it to the wrong side of the fabric (figure B). Single-needle stitch the fabric to the tearaway (figure C), keeping as close as possible to the edge (this has to be covered by merrow stitching later). Run a test piece of fabric though serger and make sure tension is set correctly for the thread being used. The width of the merrow should be adjusted for desired appearance and ease of the type of fabric being used. Merrow the hem using the sew line as visual guide (figure D). Place tearaway on sensitive to sew areas such as armholes and necklines. This will prevent them from 'stretching out' from sewing on delicate fabric. Use steps 1 through 4 and sew seam allowance as pattern indicates. Guest: Alicia Wieting Lecturer / pattern teacher at Sewing Arts Center, Santa Monica, CA E-mail: apwieting@yahoo.com
