Baskets make wonderful storage containers. Professional organizer and author Pat Moore explains how to use boxes and crates to get rid of some of your clutter in a decorative way.

Store picnic supplies in a picnic basket when it's not in use.

The pedestal sinks so popular for today's bathrooms provide no storage room. Store rolls of toilet paper in a picnic basket or other covered basket in the bathroom.

Find a decorative box with compartments to store jewelry.

Use a three-tiered wire hanging basket in the bathroom to store cosmetics, soaps or extra towels. Roll the towels for extra interest.

Use a small square covered basket to store cosmetics, and place it on the back of the toilet to keep it handy.

Use a clear acrylic cosmetic organizer for makeup brushes, eyeliner pencils and lip pencils. Stand the brushes and pencils on end for easy use (figure A).

Use an old hatbox or Shaker-style box in the bathroom to hold the hair dryer, curling iron and hairbrushes. Put on the lid to hide them away.

For small items, use a decorative box designed to hold computer disks. The built-in drawers keep things out of sight (figure B).

Use antique wire baskets to hold cookie cutters. Put attractive items in see-through storage baskets (figure C).

Place condiments such as soy sauce, salt and pepper in small old wooden crates for storage. When you want to use them, take the whole box out to the picnic table (figure D).

Stack antique crates on their sides to create a mini-display for flea-market finds. Change the display often, perhaps stacking antique books inside (figure E).
