Loom beading produced these colorful hatbands. The technique can be intimidating for the beginner, but it's made easier with these step-by-step instructions and today's simpler looms.

Craft expert Kathi Cardinalli creates a simply beaded hatband using a loom.

    Materials:

    Graph paper or beading pattern
    Colored pencils or marker
    Seed beads
    Beading needle and thread
    Loom

    1. Use beading pattern or create your own by coloring squares of graph paper with the markers or pencils. Cardinalli suggests leaving a white space between some of the squares to facilitate counting.

    2. String the warp threads on the loom according to the manufacturer's instructions.

    3. Thread beading needle and tie end to first warp thread.

    4. Look at pattern and begin filling the needle with the beads by dipping the needle directly into a tray of beads to pick them up (figure A). String the beads in the same order as they appear on the pattern or graph.

    5. Once all the beads are on the thread, simply push them to the end and push up through the spaces between the warp threads (figure B).

    6. Next, push needle through all of the bead holes in the row to secure them (figure C).

    7. Continue until the hatband (or other item) is finished according to your pattern.
