  • Karen Roark's "Kidapillar" Photo Album
  • A made-to-order photo album/journal
    From "Uncommon Threads"
    episode DUCT-105

Karen Roark creates a graphic journal that's perfect for carrying notes or pictures. Using printer fabric, she prints out a design and using a thread-painting technique on the sewing machine, adds the title of the journal. She sews the cover together and adds grommets for binder rings.

    PHOTO

    "Kidapillar" Photo Album
    Materials:

4 pieces fabric, 7-3/4"x9-1/2" (Karen used 2 sheets of printer fabric)
    2 pieces interfacing, 7-3/4"x9-1/2"
    thread
4 3/8" grommets and grommet setting tool
    2 rings
    photo sleeves

    1. Run image through printer. Cut fabric to size. Trace on fabric where text is to be placed. Using a freehand motion on sewing machine, "scribble" with thread to create text.

    2. Using the cover and back fabric, place wrong sides together and sew 1/4" seam. Trim, turn and press. Now fold the right sides together and sew a 1/4" seam. Press open. Topstitch on right side.

    3. For the remaining inside pieces of fabric, turn under 5/8" and topstitch on the edge nearest the inside of the album.

    4. With wrong sides together, sew fronts, interfacing and backs together. Trim, turn and press. Topstitch around edges.

    5. Mark grommet location by laying open connected sheet pockets and mark where holes occur. Cut hole for grommet with grommet tool or scissors. Using grommet tool, pinch together grommets to attach into fabric.

    6. Add interior photo sheets.

Editor's note: Sarah Molini's shabby chic lampshade is featured on this episode of Uncommon Threads. We will provide the step-by-step instructions for this project as soon as they are made available to us by our guest expert.
