    Materials:

    3 old books (1-1/2"-2" thick)
    3 glass votive holders
    3 votive candles
    glue gun
    drill
hole-saw carbon drill bit, slightly larger than the votive holder
    masking tape
    gel medium
    paintbrush
    waxed paper
    binder clips
    optional: paint and decorative ribbon

    1. Choose three books for the candelabra: look for books that are thick (they will be drilled) and have great covers or interesting decorative edges. Decide which book will be the top of the candleholder; for steps 2, 3 and 4, you will be working with this book.

    2. Measure the thickness of the top book and divide in half; this measurement will be used for drilling. Using masking tape, tape the hole-saw drill bit at the measurement (figure A). This will prevent you from drilling all the way through the book.

    3. Working on the top book and using the hole-saw bit, drill three holes in the book, drilling through both the cover and the pages (figure B). You can evenly space the holes or randomly place them; just keep in mind that the holes will house the candleholders. Use your fingers to remove any excess pages or loose pieces of paper from the holes.

    4. Paint gel medium in the drilled holes, covering the bottom and the sides (figure C). Allow to dry. This will hold the drilled book together and create a finished look.

    5. Apply gel medium inside the front and back covers and around the sides of the three books to seal the pages together. Wrap each book with waxed paper to prevent them from sticking together, secure with large binder clips and set them aside to dry (figure D).

    6. When dry, remove the waxed paper and decorate each book with ribbon or paint over the dried gel medium (figure E).

    7. Glue the books into a stack, making sure the one with the holes is on top (figure F). Angle the books in different directions to create interesting layers.

    8. Place the candleholders in the holes. Add additional ribbon, bows, charms, etc., around the base of the candle holders or along the edges of the books, if desired.
