Cynthia Willoughby, of L.A. Stencilworks, demonstrates a technique that gives home accessories a rich inlaid look -- achieved inexpensively with stain! Materials: Decorative scroll stencil or pattern (for this demonstration, Flower Scroll Panel stencil #232 from L.A.Stencilworks) A light- or medium-brown shade of acrylic tube paint A medium- or dark-brown shade of acrylic tube paint Black acrylic tube paint Three 1" stencil brushes Paper or plastic plates (for palette) Paper towels Wooden box Blue painter's tape Pencil Unfinished pine box - Begin by sanding unfinished wooden box, then staining a light color (or sand and leave natural). Apply coat of wood sealer and allow to dry before lightly sanding a second time.
- Once box has been prepared, position first stencil overlay (Overlay 1) on top, using painter's tape to secure.
- Place a piece of tape under each registration hole and mark tape with pencil.
- Dip brush into light-brown color and rub off excess on paper towel.
- Use swirling motion to apply stain over entire area of Overlay 1 (figure A ), then remove stencil.
- Position Overlay 2 on box, aligning registration marks.
- Using medium-brown stain, repeat stenciling technique for Overlay 2 and remove stencil.
- Position Overlay 3, again aligning registration marks.
- Stencil the 4 comma-shaped cutouts in the darker brown. Use third stencil brush to apply a mixture of black and darker brown (remember to rub excess off on paper towel).
- Stencil remaining design on Overlay 2 with the black-brown mixture.
- After box surface has dried, apply a clear acrylic finish for protection.
