Luminous hand-poured candles are an inexpensive way to add ambience to a room.

Hobbyist Heather Wade says a lack of disposable income and a desire to be creative led her to candlemaking. Wade says her candles are so popular among friends and family, she gives away every new candle she makes!

She shares her simple method for creating one-of-a-kind candles:

    1. She starts with a large block of paraffin that costs about $8 and provides enough wax for 10 large candles. She uses a hammer to break the block into smaller pieces.

    2. She melts the paraffin with stearic acid wax (which hardens the paraffin) in a double boiler and keeps it at a temperature of not more than 200 degrees.

    3. She adds scented oil.

    4. Wade adds chunks of paraffin to a wax mold before adding the melted wax. The chunks, which are Wade's special touch, cause the candle's surface to "glow" when the candle is lit.

    5. She pours the melted wax into the mold and adds color to the mixture.

    6. She immerses the mold in cold water to speed cooling.

    7. Once the candle has cooled, she removes the mold.
