    Hand Painted Tie

Including drying time this project takes approximately four hours to complete.

    1. Use a stencil or freehand draw an image onto a tie with tailor's chalk (figure A).

Note: Satin and silk ties are a better choice for this project.

    2. Mix orange, light brown, dark brown, peach and white to achieve a base flesh tone. For the highlights use the same colors--just add more white (figure B). For the bathing suit use hot pink mixed with iridescent hot pink.

    3. Apply the mixed base coat to your paintbrush and paint the body of the image directly onto the tie and let it dry.

Note: You need three or four coats of paint for the body, however, let the paint dry at least 30 minutes in between coats. You could use a hairdryer to speed up the process.

    4. Mix a small amount of nude acrylic paint with white acrylic paint and then add an equal amount of textile medium to create a mixture for highlights.

    5. Apply the highlight mixture to your paintbrush and paint highlights onto the body.

Note: It is best to pick a side of the image that the sun would be hitting and add highlights to only those areas.

    6. After the highlights are dry, begin to add details like the face and swimming suit.

    7. Use fabric paint right out of the bottle for the eyes (figure C) and mouth and let dry.

    8. When completed, rinse brushes clean with ordinary water.
