Let your clothes wear the bling for a change.
Everyone knows accessories can make a huge difference in how clothes look—so why not give your wardrobe permanent accessories?

Michele Beschen shows how to dress up outfits by letting the clothes sport the jewelry. It's a great way to jazz up clothing that has lost some of its zip, and it's a handy way to keep accessories with the clothes they flatter best. These techniques also let you give new life to jewelry that suffers from broken clasps or too-small chains; by attaching the pieces directly to the clothes, those flaws don't matter.

    Trick Out Your Wardrobe

Here are some of Michele Beschen's tips for adding accessories directly to your wardrobe. B. Original and look for other ways to make the most of your accessories.

    • Add a necklace to a shirt by tacking it down in a couple of places with a needle and thread. You also can use hooks and eyes or other closures that make it easy to remove the jewelry for washing. This technique also works for necklaces with broken clasps or too-short chains.

    • Create one-of-a-kind straps for strapless tops using elastic, ribbons or beads. Cut elastic to size and cover with flowers or silk leaves. Sew the elastic down the middle to attach the decorations (figure A), then sew to the shirt for a fresh look (figure B).

    • Turn a necklace into a strap for a tube top or strapless dress using a hook-and-eye set. Use instant-setting glue to attach the hook to the necklace (figure C), then sew the eye to the shirt (figure D).
