This stencil-cutting pen will allow you to carve out any design of your choosing -- using only a piece of Mylar placed on glass.

Love the look of trompe l'oeil but feel a little intimidated? Faux-finish artist Bunny deLorie uses a stencil to achieve the look -- and says it isn't as difficult as it looks!

    Materials:

    Primed canvas
    Acrylic paints and glaze
    Artist brushes
    Foam craft brush
    Stencils
    Stencil brushes
    Sea sponges
    Clear acrylic paint
    Vinyl paste
    Prepasted wallpaper or Mylar(TM)

    1. Draw design on prepasted wallpaper and cut out. (Alternatively, you could use a purchased precut stencil or use an electric stencil-cutting pen to cut your own.)

    2. With sea sponges (or a dry stencil brush), sponge background, using acrylic glaze mixed with paint. Work from the outer edges toward center so that background is lighter in center (to offset central design element).

    3. Do outlining and shading on outer edges using a flat artist brush or foam brush (figure A)

    4. Use a stencil brush (not dry) to hand-paint or stencil vase with flowers in the niche (figure B).

    5. Fill in the bridges (empty areas between stenciled areas) with a brush to achieve a handpainted look (figure C).

    6. Apply 1 or 2 coats of acrylic clear-coat to seal.

    7. When complete, use paste to add Mylar or wallpaper to wall.
