The finished mirror adds depth to Debbie's bathroom.

Next, the area around the large bathroom mirror is getting a crackle treatment.

    Crackle Finish

    Materials
    Crackle finish
    3" brush
    White flat latex paint
    Cabinets
    Materials
Satin latex paint (same color as walls)

    Steps:

    1. Prime the area around the mirror with the same primer you used on the walls. Let dry -- it's important that the glaze be applied over primer that's completely dry.

    2. Apply a coat of crackle glaze and let it dry for about 15 minutes. Be aware that it looks milky but will dry clear (figure A).

    3. When the glaze is dry, apply a coat of flat white latex over it. It will start to crackle almost at once (figure B).

    Patinated Mirror

You will need a patina-finish kit for this project (figure C). The kit will provide everything you need except a dust mask, which you will need to buy since you will be using spray formulas.

    Steps:

    1. Tape off the entire mirrored surface.

    2. Shake the can of spray-on base coat for a full minute to mix well.

Cover the entire surface of the mirror's frame using short, even sprays ( figure D).

    3. Once the surface is dry, sand it with the abrasive sponge (included in kit).

    4. Wearing gloves, apply the patina top coat with the sponge applicator that is included in the kit. Be sure the patina mixture collects in any carvings and grooves in the surface (figure E).

    5. Immediately wipe over the frame with damp paper towels, leaving streaks of the mixture in the depressions and removing it from the raised surfaces (figure F). Let dry.

    6. When the frame is dry, put on your mask and spray on the top-coat finish to seal the frame. Cover the surface completely with the finish and let it dry about 10 minutes.

    Cabinets

Debbie and Gilda prime the bathroom cabinets with the same primer they used on the walls. When it's dry, they add a coat of satin latex in the same color to give the cabinets a subtle sheen.
