Placemats can be more than camouflage for children hiding unwanted veggies: They can become swanky decorator accents in the form of chair covers or throw pillows.

Placemat Chair Covers

• Select placemats that are slightly wider than the backs of your chairs.

• Stitch two placemats together along three sides and slip over your chair back (figure A).

• Enhance further with trims and embellishments.

• Instead of sewing on all three sides, you can place eyelets or grommets up two sides and lace the cover to the chair (figure B).

Placemat Pillow

• You’ll need what Michele Beschen calls "two-ply" placemats—textile placemats that consist of two pieces of cloth sewn together.

• Rip out a small area of the seam in one side of the placemat and fill with poly-fill until it’s nice and plump (figure C).

• Stitch it back up, and you have a throw pillow in just minutes (figure D).
