Stow your stuff in style—it’s in your jeans.
Michele Beschen’s big-pocket wall organizer—recycled from a pair of jeans—is the perfect place to stow small items. And, since you hang it on the wall, your must-haves are always handy.

This B. Original project makes a great "by the door" organizer for mail, keys and other small essentials. If you have old jeans in several sizes—whether from growing kids or newly slender grownups—you can make organizers for every purpose.

Scroll down for Michele Beschen’s easy how-to.

    Big Pocket Wall Organizer

    Materials:

    blue jeans
    sewing machine, sewing supplies
    neckties
    bamboo rod
    leather cording
    belt, trim, decorative buttons

    • Cut straight across a pair of blue jeans at the crotch to remove the legs; use a stitch ripper to take out any remaining inseam (figure A). The pants now are basically a short tube.

    • Turn the jeans inside-out, line up the top edges of the waistband and pin in place (figure B).

    • Smooth down the fabric and pin along the bottom of the piece. Sew across the bottom of the pants.

    • Turn the pants right-side out.

    • To keep this bag closed, Michele Beschen stitched small strips of Velcro to the waistband on each side.

    • To add tab ties to the bag, cut three pieces about 8" long each from the skinny ends of neckties. Fold the strips in half and pin the ends in place at the back of the jeans.

    • Stitch the tab ties in place (figure C). To decorate the bag, sew oversized buttons to the tab ties and add a belt or other trim to finish the waistline.

    • To hang, drill a small hole in each end of a bamboo rod and slide the rod through the tab ties (figure D). Tie leather cording through the holes in the bamboo and hang using a picture hook or similar hardware. Add beads or other decorative touches as desired, and you have a hip "big pocket" organizer.
