This quilt was created with the help of a quilting kit. Patterns and kilts can help beginners learn design and color combinations.

Quilter Vicki Casagrande learned quilting from her grandmother, who gave quilts to family members to mark important rites of passage such as weddings or graduations.

Casagrande is carrying on her grandmother's traditions in her own quilting projects. She has family members sign quilt squares that become part of larger keepsake quilts for other family members. The family even includes quilting and quilt signings as part of bridal- and baby-shower activities -- making Casagrande's hobby an inclusive, family affair.

Casagrande says beginners who are intimidated by the hobby should think of quilting as putting together a large jigsaw puzzle -- cutting pieces apart and sewing them back together -- and advises beginners to take classes for basic instruction.
