Guest Mary O'Neil, owner of Hot Potatoes Rubber Stamps, demonstrates a new technique for achieving a batik look by stamping out designs on clothing using household cleaners. Mary suggests using dishwashing detergent because of its paintlike consistency. Materials: Cascade® dishwasher gel or other household cleaners with bleach Garments made of natural fabric: linen, silk, cotton, rayon Foam brushes Big, bold rubber stamps Cardboard - Place the garment flat on a table with a piece of cardboard under one layer.
- Use a foam brush to apply a generous amount of household cleaner to the stamp (figure A).
- Stamp the garment. Watch as the bleaching begins to take effect (figure B ).
- Wait 24 hours, then wash your garment (figure C).
Tips : - You'll achieve the best results with clean, ironed garments.
- Use a dishwasher gel with a low concentration of bleach that won't cause the fabric to deteriorate. Never use full-strength chlorine bleach. Don't use powdered dishwasher soap.
- Large, bold stamps work best.
