Ellie Joos, of Offray Ribbon Company, creates unusual giftwraps from items found around the home.

    • For a fresh approach to wrapping bottles of champagne or wine, Joos suggests using scraps of sheer fabric and securing with ribbon-wrapped electrical wire. Joos places the bottle in the middle of the fabric and gathers the excess at the top. Then she removes the wire from wired ribbon (regular ribbon would work just as well) and wraps it around a coiled electrical wire. Finally, Joos twists the covered electrical wire around the bottle in a helix shape (figure A).

    • As an alternative to paper, Joos weaves ribbons around the box, flipping the box over and placing the woven ribbons over the center of the box (figure B). She then flips the box over and secures the ribbon edges to the inside of the box.

    • Finally, Joos uses rubber stamps and metallic ink or paint to enliven a plain gift box. She uses ribbon with a coordinating color or pattern to finish the look (figure C).
