| Spray-Painting a Sisal Doormat |

Crafts & Company host Debbie Stapley jazzes up a sisal doormat by spray-painting a lattice pattern on it. Materials:
Sisal doormat
Masking tape
Newspaper
Ruler
Scissors
Marker
Spray paint (water-based enamel)
Cardboard box (to protect from paint overspray)
- Measure a 1" to 2" border from each edge around a sisal doormat. Cut a piece of newspaper the size of the center inside the border, and tape it to the doormat with masking tape. The newspaper will protect the center from the spray paint (figure A).
- Place the doormat inside a "spray booth" -- a large cardboard box -- to protect the surrounding area from overspray. Spray-paint the border of the doormat with water-based enamel (figure B).
- Remove the newspaper and masking tape. Make a lattice pattern on the center of the mat by placing strips of masking tape at a 45-degree angle and 1" apart (figure C).
- Place the doormat inside the cardboard box, and spray the center of the doormat. Debbie used only one color of spray paint, so it wasn't necessary to tape off the border. If you want to use a different color, tape over the outside border. Or if you'd prefer a double border, tape inside the first border before taping the lattice strips.
- Remove the masking-tape strips. Tape the center of the mat again, placing the strips at a 45-degree angle in the opposite direction, crisscrossing the painted stripes (figure D).
- Place the doormat inside the cardboard box, and spray-paint the center.
- Remove the tape strips, and enjoy your stenciled doormat.
