Start with basic, simple designs. Look around your house at designs on your napkins, wrapping papers, dishes, etc. For a real simple design, cut your potato in half and take a heart shaped cookie cutter and press into the potato and then break away the piece you do not need (figure A). Push your potato out of the cookie cutter then.
For a fish design, take a big Idaho potato and slice it in half. The design is already perfect for a fish body. Take a pencil and draw the eyes, mouth, scales, etc (figure B). With the extra left over from the heart potato, make the tail and fins (figure C).
When making a leaf, you can go outside and find one that looks nice to you and use as your pattern, or you can cut shapes out of the potato and automatically form the shape you want (figure D). Grapes are the easiest of all, just cut a round circle in the potato.
It is better to use 2 or 3 colors instead of just 1. Brush the paint onto your potato (figure E), or you can just dip the potato in the paint. You use acrylic paint that comes in tubes -- you can find good quality paint from an art store. You will need to mix it with water to get the right consistency. You can stencil the paint onto napkins, baskets, bags, aprons, t-shirts, hats, tennis shoes etc. Just press the design onto your object (figure F). This is a fun project to do -- just use your imagination and you can create lovely items.
