    Figure C

Artist Alexandra Becket uses painted canvas panels to create a room divider with funky flair.

    Materials:

    Canvas
    Frame
    Staples
    Charcoal or fabric pencil
    Acrylic paint, in various shades
    Brushes
    2-way hinges

Purchase or build lightweight frames. Use staples to cover the frame with canvas and secure it to the edges.

Use pencil to sketch a freehand design (or use a stencil). Create a large-scale design that takes up an entire panel and can be continued to the next (figure A).

Thin the acrylic paint before beginning to paint the design. Apply lightly so that overlapped colors are transparent and reveal the design and color underneath (figure B). Apply paint more thickly in some areas to create definition.

Continue painting panels until the desired room-divider size has been achieved. Use two-way hinges (figure C) to connect the panels. (The hinges will allow the panels to be pushed into place as desired.)
