Tammy Algood of the University of Tennessee Agricultural Extension Service explains how to make planters from chicken wire and moss.

    Materials:

    Large-weave chicken wire
    Wire cutters
    Small cardboard box
    Heavy work gloves
    Moss
    Water
    Large bowl

    Note:

    • If making a hanging basket, use small-weave chicken wire.

    1. Wear work gloves to protect your hands. Place a piece of chicken wire flat on your work surface.

    2. Place a cardboard box in the center of the chicken wire. Bend the wire up around the box. Flatten the wire down on the work surface, and cut away excess wire in the corners. The final shape will be a cross or plus sign (figure A).

    3. Place another piece of chicken wire inside the box, and cut the same cross or plus shape to fit the inside dimensions of the box (figure B).

    4. Twist the chicken wire together at the corners to shape the outside planter. Do the same with the wire for the inside of the planter (figure C).

    5. Soak moss in large bowl of water.

    6. Place pieces of moss against the sides of the outside planter (figure D).

    7. Place the inside planter on top of the moss, and twist the two together around the top edges (figure E).

    8. Fill with fruit and vegetables, or place a saucer in the bottom and add a potted plant.
