Safety glasses Nothing damages your house faster than gutters that are not properly maintained. - Sturdy gutter guards (figure A) to help deflect leaves and debris are one of the smartest investments you can make.
- Even with guards in place, you still need to clean your gutters every spring and fall. When you do, look for any hidden obstructions, and make sure water flows freely through them.
- Examine the seams and use gutter sealant to close up any leaks (figure B). If your gutters sag, check the hangers holding them and replace if necessary.
- Rust spots are signs of potential trouble. Use a grinding stone to remove the rust, and then apply several coats of sealant. If it's too far gone you may need to replace a section of gutter.
- To take out an old gutter corner and put in a brand new one, use a grinding stone and create centering holes in the old rivets. Now switch to a bit and drill them out. Remove the old corner and clean off any excess sealer with a high-speed cutter.
- Position the new corner and drill rivet holes, utilizing the old holes if possible.
- Now use the pop-rivet tool (figure C) and attach new rivets to hold the corner in place.
- When you're finished apply gutter sealant to the joints.
