    Figure B

    • Your first decision when shopping for a new washer is front-load or top-load? Front loaders may cost a little more, but they typically have a larger capacity. Some models wash up to 16 pairs of jeans in a single load.

    • If energy and water efficiency is a concern, be sure to look for an energy-star qualified washer.

    • Also, consider a machine that's easy to use and features an automatic detergent, bleach and fabric softener dispensing system (figure A).

    • When shopping for a dryer, choose a front-load or top-load dryer that matches the color and size of your washer selection, and be sure to get one with similar capacity.

    • Choosing front-loaders also gives you the flexibility of stacking your machines (figure B) or placing them on optional storage pedestals. Some washer-dryer combinations even have the same wash and dry times.

    • Some washers achieve such high spin speeds that most of the moisture is extracted from the clothes before they even reach the dryer. Once in the dryer, temperature sensors monitor the moisture in the load and automatically stops when the clothes are dried.

By comparing all the options you'll be sure to get the washer and dryer set that best fits your needs -- and provides the best care for your family's clothing.
