Materials: Decoupage medium Crackle medium Antiquing mediums 12 different patterns of paper Unfinished wood chest Poster of your choice (goes on the front of the chest) Heavyweight wrapping paper Color copy made from a swatch of fabric - Begin with sanding if a wooden piece is used.
- Paint any edges or crevices that might show from behind the paper. Driggers used a dark green paint since the poster she used on the drawer fronts had a dark background. Apply the paint with a brush in the crevices and a sponge around the edges (figure A). Be sure every corner is covered. Let dry.
- For the drawer faces: cut the paper or poster into "tiles" to fit. The finished project will look similar to a tile mural. Using a small roller, apply decoupage medium to the back of the paper and press onto drawer face (figure B ). The medium goes on white but dries clear. Be sure to press paper securely over edges. Continue covering furniture with paper "buttered" with decoupage medium.
- After the entire piece has been covered with decorative paper and the decoupage medium has dried thoroughly, apply a layer of decoupage medium over the entire surface.
- Apply crackle medium with a foam brush. Let dry about 20 minutes.
- Brush on a clear, water-based varnish. A thicker coat results in thicker crackling, and a thinner coat of varnish results in finer cracks. Let dry.
- Using a small sponge for control, apply antiquing medium to the entire surface and then rub off (figure C). Driggers used a dark umber antiquing medium.
