DIY Crafts host Vicki Payne explains an easy technique for decoupaging glass plates. Materials:
Glass plate
Gift-wrapping paper or handmade paper
Scissors with a sharp, fine point (e.g., cuticle scissors)
Glass cleaner
Paper towels
Decoupage medium
Sponge brushes
Black craft paint
- Cut out desired designs from gift-wrap, magazines, etc., using scissors with a fine, sharp point (figure A).
- Make sure the back of the glass plate is clean and dry.
- Apply a thin coat of decoupage medium to a small area on the back of the plate, using a foam brush.
- When applying the cutouts, you'll be working in reverse: the first images placed on the plate will be in the foreground of the design when viewed from the front of the plate. Start by applying the prominent images to the decoupage medium. Glue the edges firmly to the glass. Turn the plate over to check the placement of images ( figure B).
- Cut a piece of metallic paper in a circle the size of the inside dimensions of the plate. Add it as a background to the design. Continue adding decoupage medium and images around the edges of the plate. Let dry overnight (figure C).
- Apply black craft paint to the entire back of the plate, covering both the back of the images and the glass (figure D).
