Thyme makes the eyes and mondo grass the nose for this pot head. Corkscrew grass forms the hair.

     REAL VIDEO
You'll need to keep several practical factors in mind when planting your own unique pot head. Learn what they are from Disney Horticulture specialist Jessie Mack Burns.

What a fun project: Your kids can create a character container with a strawberry jar and a few plants. In this feature Disney gardening specialist Jessie Mack Burns suggests letting kids use the plant material that they think best suggests facial features.

Plants with colorful or unusually textured foliage are the most fun. Try the pink and red polka-dot plants (Hypoestes), begonias and various grasses or herbs for starters.

Make sure your strawberry jar has a drainage hole, or put gravel in the bottom to facilitate drainage. Starting with an empty jar, insert the plants that will form the eyes and nose. Then add enough potting soil to the jar to secure the roots. Leave enough room in the top of the jar to plant the hair. Add the hair in the top hole and finish packing soil around the roots.

Make sure your jar stays well watered. Full sun or a windy day can dry out a jar in a hurry; supply an occasional spritz of water-soluble fertilizer.
