Different sizes and shapes of beads add textural interest to basic bracelet designs and turn them into unique pieces of art.

Kathy Schroeder began beading in the second grade, but her interest in the hobby was renewed only in the past few years. Now passionate about beading, she teaches classes to share her interest. She says that a class is the best way for beginners to learn. Schroeder shares her method for completing a project: - Attracted by the texture and color of beads, she starts with a theme or design and then finds beads that will add dimension and enhance the design's uniqueness. She favors Delica beads, which lie flat against one another when woven.
- After the beads are chosen, Schroeder graphs the design on special paper.
- A peyote or "gourd" stitch -- used by the ancient Egyptians -- is used to link the beads together. Once the project is completed, decorative beads will be used to embellish the surface and add trim.
- Schroeder sometimes uses a bead loom to weave beads into patterns.
