Barbara Burnett, author and media director for Design Originals, turns a metal kitchen spoon into a holiday angel. Materials: Metal kitchen spoon Sealer Acrylic paint in white, black, red and peach White tea towel with Battenburg lace bottom Brewed tea in a bowl Optional: spray bottle Paintbrush Hot glue and gun Needle and thread Scissors 1/8" wooden dowel Embroidery floss Two small wooden spools Sewing machine Twist tie Yellow yarrow Moss Buttons and charms Lace Blush - Seal the back of a metal kitchen spoon with sealer.
- Paint the back of the spoon with peach acrylic paint. Let dry, and apply two more coats. This will be the angel's face (figure A).
- Create eyes by dipping the tip of a paintbrush handle in black paint and making two dots on the back of the spoon. Let the paint dry (figure B).
- Add highlights to the eyes by dotting white paint in the center of each eye with the tip of the paintbrush handle.
- Create a little heart-shaped mouth by dipping the tip of the paintbrush handle in red paint, placing two dots of red paint next to each other and drawing the brush handle tip through them and down (figure C).
- Tea-dye a lace towel by dipping it in strong tea--or apply tea to the towel with a spray bottle. Let dry. Cut off the top 4" of the towel to create sleeves for the angel's dress. With right sides together, machine-stitch a tube for the sleeves along the width of the towel. Turn right side out (figure D).
- Make the angel's arms by hot-gluing two wooden spools to the end of a 12" piece of 1/8" wooden dowel. Wrap each spool with white embroidery floss (figure E).
- Slip the angel's arms into the sleeves, and tie in the center with a twist tie.
- Run a gathering stitch in the top of the remainder of the tea towel, and pull to gather. Bring the gathers into a circle, and tack together for the angel's dress (figure F).
- Assemble the angel by hot-gluing the dress in place at the neck. Glue the arms on the back of the spoon handle below the head, the moss to the back of the head and yarrow around the face for hair (figure G).
- Hot-glue old buttons and charms around the bottom of the dress.
- Glue lace around the neckline and a charm at the center. Add a little blush to the angel's cheeks (figure H).
