A 35mm camera is the most versatile choice for the amateur photographer. Cameras can be purchased from $125 to several thousand dollars.

Rich Hirschhorn, who has engaged in photography for decades, now shares his hobby by teaching others. - Beginners, Hirschhorn says, should invest in the most basic 35mm camera possible -- one without many automatic features.
- When framing a photograph, he says, the photographer wants to imagine the picture in "thirds" -- dividing the picture both horizontally and vertically. Although instinct may lead the photographer to center the shot, truly great compositions feature objects that are framed slightly off-center.
