The area is now ready to be planted. It's time to gather all the large planters for the project and begin creating a bit of Victoriana in your own backyard. - Center large glazed urns on either side of the steppingstones.
- Variegated maiden grass (Miscanthus Sinensis Variegatus) (figure A) and mother fern (Asplenium Bulbiferum) (figure B) are planted to soften corners and cover the base of the porch. Maiden grass produces huge flowers at the end of the season and is very cold hardy. The foliage will die back at the end of the season and can also be trimmed back in the spring if needed due to cold snaps or frost damage. Mother fern does best in a slightly shaded environment.
In addition to the maiden grass and mother fern, the following plants were used in the planting bed: - Flower carpet rose (Rosa Flower Carpet) (figure C), a low-maintenance rose, does not require pruning. It fills out but does not overwhelm the planting space, and it can be treated like a garden shrub.
- Sweet broom (Cytisus X Spachianus) (figure D) is excellent for background color (the yellow helps pop out the surrounding plant colors) and foliage contrast. It can either be sheared down or left to grow freely.
- Daylily (Hemerocallis Pink) (figure E), one of the hardiest of perennials, has no pest concerns and is a heavy bloomer if spent flowers are snipped off at their base to prevent the formation of seed pods.
- Annual bedding plants in shades of pink, purple, blue, white and yellow are added to the front of the bed. Mulch the beds with bark mulch when the plantings are finished.
