The screws used to secure shelf panels and brackets are hidden on the back surface -- so the front remains unmarred.

The cut shelf pieces are smoothed with hand sanding, the brackets are mounted and the shelf begins to take shape.

The Swedish Wall Shelf pattern in Bruce Johnson's demonstration was featured in the February 2000 issue of American Woodworker magazine. For ordering information, go to the Resources list below and click on "Swedish Wall Shelf Pattern".

    Materials:

    Brackets and back panel
    Medium-grit sandpaper
    Drill press with sanding drum
    Wood glue
    Clamps
    Block of soft scrap wood
    Screwdriver
    Screws

    1. Lightly sand all pieces to smooth the wood's surface and remove any marks. (Avoid using a power sander or coarse sandpaper, which can damage many woods.)

    2. Use drill press with sanding drum to sand the curved edges and crevices of the edges (figure A).

    3. Cut the scrap wood to create a spacer 7 5/8" long.

    4. Center the spacer block on the back shelf panel. Place brackets on each side of the block, using clamps to hold in place. Measure distance from outer surface of bracket to back panel edge. If necessary, reposition so that the pair of brackets is centered on the panel.

    5. Use pencil to draw vertical lines alongside both inner and outer edges of both brackets (figure B), then flip panel over.

    6. Measure and reposition brackets and spacer. Use another clamp to secure the spacer block and brackets to the back panel (figure C).

    7. Flip panel again, so holes are drilled from back of panel. Use drill to countersink holes (within the vertical lines). Position first hole about 3" from the top edge; the second, 2-3" lower (figure D). Use screwdriver to drive screws through the panel, into the brackets. Repeat for other bracket.
