Custom furniture designer Wayne Skinner dresses up a flea-market ottoman in a skirted slipcover. Materials: 1 used ottoman of average size 3 yards upholstery fabric 7 yards welting cord 2 yards muslin for lining Sewing machine Thread Pins Scissors Fabric Selection Tips: - Buy solids or all-over patterned fabric to avoid difficulty in matching pieces.
- Avoid purchasing a slick-finish fabric for a slipcover.
Measuring pieces: - First, measure from corner to corner of the top of the ottoman. Add 2" to the dimensions to allow for the crown.
- Then measure width and length of ottoman and determine height of boxing (4") for boxing inset.
- Next, measure from bottom of boxing to floor and add 2" for skirt.
- To measure skirt cover, measure length and width of ottoman and add 4" to measurement (the measurement for the muslin lining will be reduced by 4").
- The pleat insert is 9" wide plus the height of the skirt for cover fabric and lining.
Assembling and Sewing the Slipcover: - Cut all pieces of fabric to above dimensions.
- To make box-top fit more snugly, cut corners at 1/2", decreasing at 5" to 6" along each side.
- Cover the welting cord with upholstery fabric cut on the bias and attach around the top piece (figure A).
- Next, sew boxing inset to the top (figure B).
- Collect pieces for skirt and place lining on right side (figure C). Next, sew lining and upholstery together at either end. Arrange piece with upholstery fabric turned equally on either end, and sew bottom together. Turn sewn pieces right side out and press.
- Sew insert fabric and muslin right sides together at sides and bottom. Turn right side out and press.
- Finally, sew all sides together. Cover welting cord as above and attach to top of skirt. Attach skirt welting to bottom of boxing to complete the slipcover.
