Making a welt pocket with a flap is actually not as difficult as you might imagine. Here's Susan Khalje's method.

    1. Fuse interfacing to pants back where welt will be sewn. On the wrong side of the fabric, mark welt with tracing paper and tracing wheel (figure A).

    2. Using a small machine stitch, start in the middle of the welt and stitch around the welt box, overlapping where you start and stop.

    3. Machine baste flap to upper stitch line of welt. After stitching, trim seam allowance. Machine baste welt along lower stitch line. After stitching, trim seam allowance.

    4. Place pocketing over welt, matching lines. Baste pocketing by hand.

    5. Now you want to flip the pants over and stitch around the welt box once again, from the wrong side of the pants (this allows you to see and follow all previous stitching lines). Slash the welt and pull the pocket through (figure B).

    6. Stitch the welts to the slashed corners across the V and through the pocketing.

    7. Stitch the side seams of the pocket. From the inside, stitch across the stitch line of the top welt, catching the pocketing. (You will only sew through the seam allowance of the welt and the pocketing fabric, not the linen outer layer).
