Ellie Schneider of OffrayB. Ribbon Company shows how to make a card with a birthday cake design woven in ribbon. The process involves drawing a design, cutting slits in the paper and weaving ribbon through the paper. Send completed cards to friends and family or offer them as gifts. Materials: Eight plain white greeting cards, 5" x 6 7/8" Matching postcard stock Craft knife Offray polyester fleur ribbon, 3/8" wide, in cream, peach, and light pink 6" Offray satin ribbon, 1/8" wide, in peach Five small multicolored Offray ribbon roses Pink and yellow embroidery floss Decorative-edged scissors - Find the center of the card, and mark a point about 3/4" below the center point.
- Draw a rectangle 2 5/8" by 1 3/4" around the mark, and draw five vertical lines equally spaced inside the rectangle.
- Draw a second rectangle 1/8" around the outside of the first rectangle ( figure A).
- Poke evenly spaced holes around the second rectangle for what will become the floss-trimmed edge (figure B).
- Open the card, and place it on a cutting surface with the front facing up.
- Cut along the vertical lines, including the end lines, making seven vertical cuts. Erase any pencil marks (figure C).
- Stitch the holes around the perimeter of the second rectangle with three strands of matching embroidery floss (figure D).
- Begin weaving from left to right with the peach fleur ribbon, making sure to feed the ribbon through the first slit from the back of the card. Weave down through the second and so on to the end of the card (figure E).
- Use the cream fleur ribbon to weave the second row, alternating under and over the paper from the first ribbon (figure F).
- Weave the third row with light-pink fleur ribbon in the same direction as the first row of peach ribbon.
- Finish the top row with peach ribbon to complete the cake design.
- Lightly draw four candles on the top right side of the cake. Cut small slits on the bottom of each candle and a slanted slit at the top. Erase the pencil lines (figure G).
- For candles, cut a 6" piece of 1/8" peach satin ribbon into four equal pieces.
- Thread one piece from the back of the bottom slit up to the slanted slit. Repeat this process with the other three candles.
- Make a French knot at the top of each candle for the flame (figure H).
- Tape loose ends to the back of the card and cover by gluing stock paper over the back of the work.
- Cut the edges of the card, using decorative-edged scissors, and embellish the card with small, colorful Offray ribbon roses, if desired (figure I).
