Chris Wallace, formerly of Duncan Enterprises, explains how to make lamps out of items commonly found in our homes and back yards and at craft stores. She creates an attractive, playful lamp by applying several different paints and adding wooden cutouts. Materials:

For best results, read all the directions before beginning this project. - Using the 3/4" flat brush, apply one coat of All-Purpose Primer to all wooden surfaces. Let dry.
- Dip the 3/8" shader brush in dish soap, then load it with Liquid Masking Tape. Paint cloud shapes around the sides of the rectangle box. Let dry (figure A).
- Pour equal amounts of Flow Medium and medium violet onto palette paper, and load a damp sponge with Flow Medium. Blend in the medium violet, using a swirling motion. sponge onto the sides of the rectangle box. Let dry (figure B).
- Blend Flow Medium and light lime in the sponge, and apply to the top of the rectangle box, avoiding the white sides. Let dry.
- Peel off the Liquid Masking Tape to reveal clouds (figure C). Outline and detail the clouds with black 3D Paint. Let dry.
- Using a cotton swab, add medium turquoise dots to the lid. Let dry. Outline with black 3D Paint. Let dry.
- Tape the sides of the box. Using the Wide-Liner on a bottle of black 3D Paint, apply stripes to the edges of the lid. Let dry. With a cotton swab, apply light lime to the grooves of the lid and the bottom of the box (figure D).
- Using the Flow Medium technique described in steps 3 and 4, sponge Medium Fuchsia onto the lid of the round box. Let dry. Using a cotton swab, apply black dots to the top of the lid. Squeeze out smaller dots of black 3D Paint.
- Mask a 1" stripe with adjacent 1/4" and 1/8" stripes on the side of the box. Using the 3/4" flat brush, paint the 1" stripe black. Using the number 2 liner brush, paint the 1/4" stripe medium turquoise and the 1/8" stripe medium violet. Using the Tri-Liner Tip on a bottle of black 3D Paint, squeeze out a wavy line between the sets of stripes. Let dry (figure E).
- Using the 3/4" flat brush, paint the squares, knob and apples black. Squeeze out black 3D Paint dots on the large square. Let dry. Paint white 1" circles on the apples. Let dry. Paint medium turquoise circles over part of the white circles. Squeeze out black 3D Paint dots around the perimeters of the medium turquoise circles. Let dry.
- Using the number 2 liner brush, paint the bases of the egg stands black, the center sections white, and the tips medium fuchsia. Apply black 3D Paint dots on the white area. Let dry.
- Using the 3/4" flat brush, paint the stars light lime, one heart medium fuchsia and the other medium violet. Let dry.
- For a protective finish, apply 1 to 2 coats of Satin Varnish, using the 3/4" flat brush.
- Drill a hole through the center of the large square and through both boxes.
- Using Professional Wood Glue, glue the apples to the egg stands. Let dry. Glue the rectangle box to the top of the apples. Let dry.
- Using Thick Designer Tacky Glue, glue small squares to the sides of the boxes where the hearts and stars will be, then glue the hearts and stars to small squares. Let dry.
- Assemble the lamp, following the package instructions.
- Cut 3"-wide strips of fabric long enough to wrap completely around the lampshade. Starting at the top innermost side, wrap the strips around the shade, tucking the ends under each new strip. Glue each strip in place with a dot of Thick Designer Tacky Glue and hold with a clothespin. Glue trim around the top and bottom of the shade (figure F).
- Squeeze dots of black 3D paint onto the lampshade (figure G).
- Drill a hole in the knob, and use Thick Designer Tacky Glue to attach it to the top of the lamp (figure H).
- Drill a small hole in the top of the knob and the small star. Curl wire around the brush handle, and glue it to star and knob, using Thick Designer Tacky Glue ( figure I).
Tip - When gluing painted surfaces, use Tacky Glue; use wood glue for unpainted surfaces.
