Mellissa Gutierrez and Brandi Nace, of the Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders, share tips they've picked up in the course of their scrapbooking experiences. - Cut shapes from an ordinary kitchen sponge (figure A) and use them to decorate scrapbook pages. If you want to try this technique, be aware that dipping the sponge in the paint can be messy. A better way is to apply the paint to the sponge with a brush.
- Stick-on "gems" (figure B) or "tattoos" (figure C) can be adhered to scrapbook pages, either on the bare paper or on top of sponged or glued designs.
DIY crafts expert Debbie Stapely drew inspiration from the cheerleaders' scrapbooks and decided to create oversize books for her own children. - She made her covers out of mat board, held together with binder rings and grommets (figure D), which you can add at home with a simple grommet kit.
- Stapely suggests letting the kids decorate their own books with stickers, collages, laminating, etc.
- If your kids want to use sponges to embellish their scrapbooks, use paper-thin sponges (figure E) that plump up when placed in water (figure F). Just squeeze out the excess water and dip into (or brush on) paint.
To organize photos for scrapbooking, Stapely says she always has double prints made, then gives one set of prints to her children and keeps the other for her own use. She files them in photo-storage boxes, arranging the kids' set by name and her own set by date (figure G).
Web Extra: More on scrapbooking with the Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders Your scrapbooks are huge and unwieldy. How do you keep them together?
Brandi: We have them bound at a print shop. I'm in charge of collecting all of the final scrapbook pages from all of the girls. And once I've collected them, I take them and have them laminated, and then we have them bound into our final cover. Where do all the pictures come from?
Brandi: The girls donate their own pictures, and some of them have copies made just for the scrapbook.
Melissa: We also have professional pictures that we've taken throughout the year that the staff allows us to use in the scrapbook. How do you organize all of the photos?
Melissa: We have a special file that we created and placed in our locker room. We have different folders labeled with group events, games, etc. We made it really convenient for girls to obtain copies of their pictures and then place them in the folders. We collect them all when we're ready to start putting the scrapbook together. It wasn't always this easy. How did it used to be?
Brandi: I've always worked on scrapbooks, all my life. It's a huge hobby of mine. During my first year as a cheerleader, when it got time to really organize it and get it together -- we just had this huge box of pictures and we were like, "Well what does this go to and what's this?" And so that's when I said, "Okay, next year I'm taking charge." And that's when we decided to start a system and do the filing. Do you have a favorite part of your scrapbooks?
Brandi: My favorite part of the book is our group page. Being a Dallas Cowboys Cheerleader, we're separated into groups that we rotate the field with, and it becomes like your family throughout the year. So my favorite page was our group page because it was a lot of fun and had a lot of inside jokes. What are these scrapbooks used for?
Brandi: They go on display on the Dallas Cowboys complex, so that visitors can come by and see what goes into being a Dallas Cowboys cheerleader and what all we do throughout the year besides performing at the games. How is the layout work divided up?
Brandi: The girls volunteer what event they want to do. Some have a favorite event that they like, like Thanksgiving halftime or our Christmas halftime show. We have a competition among the girls to see who has the best scrapbook page. How do you find the time?
Melissa: Our schedules are pretty packed. I mean, most of the girls on the squad either have full-time jobs or they're full-time students. We also have full-time moms on the squad. It's just nice every once in a while, when we do have a break, to gather all of our memories and put them together. You just kind of have to make time.
