Floral appliques are a fresh approach to adding dimension, color and texture to a garden-themed page or album. Here, designer Juliana Hudgins uses satin appliques to create an entire garden journal.

    Materials:

    FabricPuff appliques in "Flowers Bright"
    FabricPuff appliques in "Butterflies Bright"
24-gauge green and non-tarnish copper wire
    1/8" hole punch
    Wire tool with small dowel
    Wire cutters
    Round nose pliers
    White cardstock
    Hunter green cardstock
    Marker or pen
    Craft knife
    Pencil

    1. First, place a piece of white cardstock at top of background page.

    2. Double-mat the photos, first on white, then hunter green, and place on layout. Hand write caption, mount on hunter green cardstock, then place on layout.

    3. Next, measure and trim 5 pieces of cardstock to create staggered tabs. Trim each piece of cardstock so that it reveals the tab on the page beneath it. When finished, all tabs should be easily visible. Add a sticker to top of each tab. In this example, Hudgins cuts a border sticker ("Earth Laughs in Flowers") apart, and uses one word for each tab (figure A).

    4. Then, stack all five pieces of tabbed cardstock. Place applique to right side of top page and use pencil to trace around it. This will become the template for the three pages underneath.

    5. Use a craft knife to cut the applique shape from the top page, then trace and trim the underlying pages (figure B), taking care not to trace or cut the last page.

    6. Next, glue a FabricPuff flower applique to the last page, so it appears in the windows on each page before it.

    7. To create stems, hand-tear hunter green cardstock. Add strip directly under the applique on the last page. Embellish top with sticker border, leaving 1/4" from the left side free for the coiled binding.

    8. Then, add two appliques to the front cover (to the left and center of the first applique on the last page) and adhere "stems" directly underneath.

    9. Add title to front page, and embellish pages with various stickers and the butterfly appliques.

    10. To create the binding, punch all pages on the left edge with 1/8" hole punch. Then, create a coil with the green wire. Loop the wire around the small dowel on the wire tool, making the same number of loops as the punched holes in the booklet.

    11. Before removing the wire, stretch the coil to the same length as the binding side of the booklet. Remove from the dowel and thread through the booklet until all holes are threaded with wire.

    12. Trim any excess and use pliers to finish the ends. Mount to album page.
