This same technique can be altered to suit any floral design.

Designer Jill Miller uses decoupage to create three-dimensional floral effects on this "Calla Lily" page.

    Materials:

2 sheets calla lily paper (or other floral design)
    Paper with soft green stripes
    Crystal Lacquer
    Foam tape
    Craft knife
    Scissors
    Straight edge
    Pencil

    1. Begin by placing floral page over striped page. Allow some of the striped page to extend past the floral page as a guide. Use pencil to make small marks on the floral page at areas where you want striped areas to be revealed (figure A). Do this on top and bottom edge of floral paper. Use ruler to connect the lines, skipping areas where floral pattern appears.

    2. Then, use straight edge and craft knife to remove background areas on floral paper. Make cuts only where pencil marks appear -- do not cut through floral pattern.

    3. Then, use craft knife to begin moving extraneous background material to create negative space around the flowers (figure B).

    4. Mount striped paper on cardstock, then layer floral page over striped paper. Floral paper should reveal the stripes (figure C).

    5. Cut three flowers from second piece of floral paper. Use foam tape to apply directly on top of corresponding flowers on the floral page (figure D).

    6. Apply crystal lacquer to the three flowers to create a glossy, dimensional finish (figure E). Allow crystal lacquer to dry about 30 minutes.

    7. Next, measure 3/4" from top of floral print paper. Use pencil to mark small guides along bars of striped paper (figure F). Use craft knife to cut small slots in floral paper, around background stripes.

    8. Cut one strip of 7 bars of striped pattern. Weave over and under stripes and background paper.

    9. Finally, add matted photo to page. Turn one corner of photo under lacquered flowers. Add titling as desired.
