Containers are as important to a flower arrangement as the flowers themselves. "America's Flower Man," Dale Rohman of Beyond Concepts, disguises a terra-cotta flowerpot by gluing foliage to the outside, adding a willow branch handle and arranging pink roses inside. Then he adds cellophane to a glass bowl for a shimmering icy effect. Rose Willow Basket Materials:
Glass mixing bowl
Liquid floor polish
Water
Glue gun and hot glue
Fresh leaves
6" terra-cotta flowerpot
Paper towels
Floral foam
Shallow plastic container with 6" diameter opening
Floral tape
Corkscrew willow or similar pliable branches
Paring knife
Optional: floral wire
Optional: green spray paint
Sheet moss
Fresh roses
- In a glass mixing bowl, mix two parts water and one part liquid floor polish (figure A).
- Dip leaves and foliage into the polish mixture, and let them soak for 20 minutes. The coating will prevent the leaves from drying out and becoming brittle. Remove the leaves from the mixture, and place them right side up on paper towels to dry (figure B).
- Hot-glue the backs of the leaves to a terra-cotta flowerpot in a fish-scale design, starting at the top of the container and working around and down the sides (figure C).
- Tape a block of floral foam to the inside of a shallow 6"-diameter plastic floral container (figure D).
- Place the container in the terra-cotta flowerpot so that the floral foam extends slightly above the top edge of the pot (figure E).
- Cut the ends of corkscrew willow branches at an angle with a paring knife (figure F). Any pliable branches may be used.
- Poke the angled ends of the branches into the sides of the floral foam almost parallel to the work surface, on opposite sides of the container, to create a circular handle. Use two branches on each side (figure G).
- Bring the ends of the branches up in an arch, and twist the ends together, creating a circular arched handle. If necessary, reinforce the branches with floral wire ( figure H). Optional: Apply green spray paint to the branches.
- Cover the floral foam with sheet moss (figure I).
- Cut the stems of fresh roses at an angle, using a paring knife, and arrange them in the floral foam (figure J).
Shimmering Ice Calla Lily Arrangement Materials:
Large clear glass bubble-bowl floral container
Clear cellophane sheets
Five calla lily blooms
Three large leaves
Water
Chenille stem
- Scrunch each sheet of cellophane lengthwise by running your hand from one end to the other, reducing it to a thinner strip. Shape the strip into a ring similar to a doughnut the size of the diameter of the glass floral container. Overlap the ends of the cellophane to make the correct size to fit the container (figure K ).
- Stack the cellophane rings inside the clear glass bubble-bowl floral container. The center of the rings will provide a space for placing the flowers (figure L ).
- Bunch five calla lilies together, and wrap a chenille stem around the stems slightly below the midpoint. The chenille stem will hold the flowers together securely (figure M).
- Scrunch a sheet of cellophane lengthwise, and wrap it around the flower stems, covering the chenille stem.
- Place the flowers in the glass container inside the cellophane rings. Place three leaves into the arrangement around the callas (figure N).
- Pour water into the container. Spray the leaves with a commercial leaf-shine product.
Variation: - Use a smaller clear-glass bowl, layer the cellophane rings inside, and place three votive candles inside clear glass votive candleholders on top of the cellophane layers. Pour water over the cellophane rings, and light the candles.
