Diane Giancola, fashion director for Prym-Dritz, demonstrates how to dye wood and wicker to create beautiful home furnishings. Materials: Rubber gloves Dritz Dylon Cold Water Fabric Dye® Water Throwaway container Paintbrush, foam brush or rag Sandpaper Tack cloth Polyurethane Steel wool, 000 Note: Once pots, bowls and utensils have been used for mixing dye, they shouldn't be used again for food preparation. - In a throwaway container, mix a package of dye with water. Do not add the fixative that comes with the dye or the salt recommended for fabric use.
- Wear rubber gloves. Sand the wood to remove any finish. Use a tack cloth to remove sanding particles (figure A).
- Apply the dye to the wood surface with a paintbrush, a foam brush or a rag. Go back over the wood, adding another coat, if you want a darker color. Remove excess dye with a rag if you prefer a lighter color (figure B).
- To dye small wicker baskets, double the amount of pigment powder in the water, and dip the basket into the bowl of dye (figure C).
- Seal wood pieces with three coats of polyurethane, sanding with steel wool between coats.
Tip: - Test colors on a piece of scrap wood, varying the intensity of the amount of dye pigment, mixing colors or using multiple applications (figure D).
