    Tools:

    Mini lathe
    1" roughing gouge
    3/8" spindle gouge
    Thin parting tool
    Standard parting tool
    French curve scraper
    Square end scraper
    Calipers
    Depth gauge
    Dry wood blank
    Shellac/wood finish

    Steps:

    • Place the wood square in the lathe. Use a roughing gouge to make a cylinder. Start at the corner, rolling the tool towards the center.

    • Move the lathe rest in toward the wood. Use a parting tool to make tenons on each end (figure A).

    • Establish the top and bottom of the wood using a parting tool to separate (figure B). 1/3 of the wood should be the top; the other 2/3 is the bottom.
